5 Questions That Will Make You A Better Writer

I believe everything can be done better in life. And writing makes no exception to this, don’t you think (no, this is not one of the questions!)? But how? What drives evolution? Is it other people’s criticism? Is it self-observation? Is it the desire of getting better?

Maybe all of them, but it starts with questioning your own way of doing things and questioning involves… oh well… questions.

Here are 5 questions that will make you a better writer. Actually, your answers to them, not the questions themselves.

1) What do I love about my writings?

I’m sure you love something, otherwise you wouldn’t do it anymore. Maybe you love the feeling of freedom. Or maybe you hate the process, but you love the end result. Whatever it is, you need to realize it so you can use it later on (as a motivation or as a focus point).

2) What do I hate about my writings?

I hope you hate nothing about your writings, but I’m realistic and I know that’s not how it works. So, if you hate something about your writings, you need to realize it.

Maybe it’s something you can improve or maybe it’s something you can avoid… Whatever it is, you have the control, therefore, (hopefully) you can do something about it!

3) What do I miss about my writings?

This often happens when you don’t have the chance to write about the topics you love. Or you used to have a certain style and you changed it because of who knows why.

If you miss something in regards with your writings, then you probably need to re-integrate that in your current style. It will make you feel better and more fulfilled.

4) If I could start from scratch, what would I do different?

This question is intended to make you realize how off are you compared to your starting point. Are you on the path you hoped for?

Maybe you can get back on that track or maybe it’s time to start something new. Only you can tell.

5) What do I admire about other writers?

There are several reasons why a writer should be a reader. And if you are one, then you surely have one or more favorite writers. What do you admire about them? Is it their style? Is it the speed with which they manage to continuously publish posts or books? Is it the topics they approach?

Once you realize what you admire the most about other writers, try integrating that in your own writings. If you do it long enough, it will become part of your habits as a writer.

As you know, the life of a writer is not easy. And I think this is mostly because there is no blueprint or something that would apply for everyone. And that, my magnificent friend, is both the blessing and the curse of this writing path.

Which questions helped you so far in your writing path?

    • I know it’s not very motivating. Mainly because it requires lots of work. Besides writing and publishing, you need to consider the marketing as well. Without it, it is really hard to grow…
Thank you very much for reading and for sharing your thoughts!

  1. This is a very honest and dead on view of writing. It is not easy and I for one had trouble starting a blog for public consumption. All my previous work had been internal company work on technical issues I am the readers were familar with. Writing for the general public is uncomfortable at best.

And definitely be a reader to study style and format of other writers.

    • It will get easier in time. I’m sure of it. But in the beginning, it’s tough… That’s probably why most people quit after a few months or an year. It’s not easy.
